Leslie is a public school mom, a public health executive, and a lifelong advocate for progressive issues. From working to build the anti-sweatshop movement across the U.S. to facilitating the training of tens of thousands of healthcare workers, Leslie thinks big and works to make positive structural change for our society. Combining strong Democratic values and business experience, Leslie will focus on innovation & economic growth to increase the quality of life for all Marylanders, especially the most vulnerable.
Labor Rights Advocacy
After college, Leslie spent a volunteer year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, which had a profound impact on her future work. At 25, she co-founded a nonprofit labor rights organization, and spent the next 8 years advocating for workers' rights and corporate social responsibility. Lecturing at more than 300 universities, with annual guest lectures at a number of business schools, Leslie brought the message of factory workers right to MBA graduate students and future corporate executives. She made the case for independent monitoring of factories, higher wages, and the rights to freely associate and form independent unions. She was invited by then Rep. Sherrod Brown D-OH to brief members of Congress on corporate social responsibility solutions for US corporations operating abroad. She won gains for workers by pushing for independent monitoring of factories, stronger Codes of Conduct, higher wages, and the rights to collectively bargain. Her work was profiled by John Perkins (Confessions of an Economic Hitman) in his two subsequent books, The Secret History of the American Empire (2008) and Hoodwinked (2009).
Public health & Patient safety
Currently, Leslie is the Executive Director of a public health organization, providing infection prevention and control expertise to the nation’s healthcare facilities. She has negotiated more than 2000 contracts in her career, including multi-million dollar federal contracts for training healthcare workers, prioritizing patient safety, and keeping our healthcare facilities safe from healthcare-association infections and diseases, like Ebola. She has built relationships with nearly 40 state health departments to deliver infection prevention programming to their states' healthcare workers. In 2017, she launched a new recognition program to identify hospitals with the best patient safety processes, so that patients can choose hospitals based on infection prevention excellence.
Leslie has been committed to volunteer work throughout her life, and in doing so, has met and heard stories from people of all walks of life. These relationships have informed her advocacy work, and shaped her career. She has done volunteer work in the US and abroad, in domestic violence shelters, orphanages, hospitals, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. She has taught English as a Second Language to Latino immigrants, and helped to run a youth group for Haitian girls. She matched young girls in a low-income neighborhood with sponsors to pay for schooling, clothing and supplies. In her role as the President of the Board of Directors at the Esther Peterson Child Development Center at the U.S. Department of Labor, she led the negotiation of a multi-million dollar contract that incorporated a profit-sharing component to raise teacher salaries on an annual basis. Leslie is a member of the Women's Democratic Club of Montgomery County, Rollingwood Citizens Association, and Rosemary Hills Elementary School PTA.
Leslie has a Bachelor's degree in Biology from St. Joseph’s University, a Master's degree in Theology/Ethics from Union Theological Seminary, a Master's degree in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University, and a certificate of leadership from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.
Leslie is married to Glenn, whom she met at the beach when she was 12 years old. They live in Chevy Chase with their two children, Vivienne (7) and George (5).
